August was the first month of this fantastic volunteer project.

The first impact with thessaloniki was fantastic, the city showed itself to me as a little jewel nestled by the sea; I love the way the narrow alleys of the upper city winding down to meet the tallest and most modern buildings near the sea. One thing that struck me a lot is the constant presence of cats along the streets as if to act as guardians to the numerous small churches that dot the city.
The first day at the refuge shelter I was insecure I did not know how to face these young boys but their kindness and availability immediately reassured me and the days passed quickly and serene. Some guys were immediately available and curious about the activities we tried to propose, for others it took more time as normal given their difficult situation. Already in the first month we were able to take numerous English lessons, painting courses, computer science basics and games in the garden. Over time the relationship with them has become more conversational and now it is not unusual even to cook and eat all together.
One strange feeling remains fixed in my brain, talking to them always gives me the feeling of talking to people more mature than their real age, people who have had to grow up faster than they should.
I’m sure they can learn a lot from me and that I have a lot to learn from them.
