COMPASS NATIONAL TRAINING COURSES ON HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION WITH YOUNG PEOPLE 2022

Compass and Compasito are Council of Europe’s tools used in training educators, youth workers, leaders of local communities and public authorities on human rights.

The aim of the training courses is to support and equip youth workers, educators, social scientists, cultural mediators and public servants with specific tools and techniques in the promotion of human rights through awareness raising activities/dissemination seminars.

Objectives: 

To train participants in experiential methods of teaching with regards to human rights education, through the use of Compass and Compasito.

To train participants to carry out one human rights awareness-raising activity based on the needs of each community or structure through the use of Compass/Compasito.

- To disseminate the value of human rights through awareness-raising activities and to utilise Compass and Compasito as a tool to achieve this objective.

Timeline:

April - May 2022: Preparation of training programme and evaluation methods, search for training participants

June 2022: Implementation of training course in Thessaloniki, Greece

July 2022: Implementation of training course in Tirana, Albania 

August - September 2022: Implementation of dissemination seminars 

October - November 2022: Evaluation

The training courses will take place in Thessaloniki (4 days) and in Tirana (2 days) respectively with the participation of professionals either from cities outside.

Trainings participants will be recruited based on various inclusion criteria, such as geography, cultural background and position in the community and representation of all relevant institutions and organisations. Representatives from the following groups will be recruited: Roma and refugee communities, child protection institutions, public services, teachers in secondary education and relevant NGOs working in the field of child protection and human rights promotion.  

Each training participant will be asked to organise and carry out a human rights awareness raising activity (dissemination seminar) in their city, local community or structure, using Compass or Compasito or both tools. Each dissemination seminar will last about two days and will involve at least 10 participants.

The following knowledge, skills and attitudes will be developed through the course:  

Knowledge:

- Key concepts, such as: freedom, justice, equality, human dignity, non-discrimination, democracy, rights, responsibilities, solidarity

- The notion that human rights include a framework for negotiation and achievement of consent related to desired situations and behaviors in the family, school, personal and community environment

- The role of human rights now, in the past and in the future in the lives of each participant, each community, and other people around the world

- Different ways of witnessing and experiencing human rights in various communities, various groups within the same community and various sources of legalisation, including national, European and international sources

- Social changes, historical events and causes that resulted in the recognition of the human rights regime

- Main international instruments that exist for the application and defence of human rights, such as the Universal Declaration for Human Rights (UDHR), the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), and the EU Charter of Fundamental Freedoms (CFR).

Skills

- Active listening and communication ability to listen to different points of view, defend the rights on behalf of oneself and the rights of others

- Critical thinking: researching information, evaluating them in a critical way, becoming aware of one's predispositions and unconscious biases, recognising manipulative behaviour patterns and decision making based on sound and logical judgment

- Ability to cooperate and manage conflict in a constructive and positive way

- Ability to participate in and organise social groups

- Action in order to promote and safeguard human rights at the local and regional level 

Attitudes

- Sense of responsibility for one' s actions and dedication to personal development and social change

- Curiosity and open mind, appreciation for diversity

- Empathy and solidarity with others and personal commitment for the defence of those whose human rights are threatened
