On Tuesday, 17 June 2025, the European Parliament decided to step up its action to tackle online child sexual abuse more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child sexual abuse online has reached alarming proportions. Years of consultation and efforts by civil society actors have highlighted the need to update EU legislation on child sexual abuse crimes to take into account technological developments and improve support for victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Parliament stated that EU legislation must treat all forms of child sexual abuse equally, regardless of whether they occur online or offline. This position aims to equip Member States with the appropriate tools to combat all new forms of child sexual abuse and to allow child victims to access justice, without the risk of statutes of limitations for such offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The production, possession or use of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) generated by artificial intelligence is now criminalised in the recast Directive, even if it is intended for personal use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Negotiations between the European Parliament, the European Commission and EU Member States to turn this landmark vote into law now begin. EU governments must now step up their efforts and implement the legal reforms needed to build a safer world for all children \u2013 online and offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
